The program is designed for completion in five years, the last year of which is the clinical internship. The first two years are relatively course intensive, during which students complete basic courses in research methodology, scientific domains of psychological inquiry, and core clinical courses in psychopathology, assessment, and psychosocial interventions.
Students become involved in faculty-led research teams during their first year, affording them the opportunity to collaborate with team members in developing research questions, designing empirical studies, collecting and analyzing data, writing manuscripts, and presenting scientific papers at national and regional conferences.
The Clinical program emphasizes student involvement in collaborative research beyond their thesis research, providing a broad foundation in research methodology prior to formulating their dissertation research during their third year.
We expect our students to have several scholarly publications and presentations at scientific meetings prior to applying for the pre-doctoral internship. Students also acquire clinical skills in assessment and intervention beginning in their second year.

The Doctorate of Psychology Degree PsyD is a relatively new offering which first came into being in the s. This degree is geared for those who are more interested in the practice of psychology and will have less emphasis on research and more focus on applied topics.
The degree was started as an alternative to the traditional PhD and works well for those whose career interests are limited to applied practice of the profession. A PsyD degree will allow you to work and practice in almost all mental health fields. The programs typically take years to complete and not all are funded.
When you are researching PsyD programs, be sure that you are looking closely at whether they are APA accredited as well as what the internship match rate is for the program, both of which will impact your employability after you have graduated. The Doctor of Education EdD degree is a doctoral degree given by a department of education. Many programs are focused on education and related areas; however, there are programs such as counseling psychology EdD's, which can be quite similar to PhD programs.
This degree can be seen as a mix of the PsyD and educational psychology PhD.
