I can find no solution - this is driving me nuts! All drivers are Windows 7 compatible, no bit workstations are being used, tried using two different print servers server and , installed latest drivers, disabled all bidi support, removed all unused drivers on all workstations, etc. I see no reason whatsoever why this should be happening. I'm also having these issues. I have 3 HP z Win7 x64 machines, but only one of them "looses" their printers. Our printers are pushed out using GPO and we use server for our print server.
Restarting the workstation seems to fix the problem, but usually only for a week before the problem resurfaces. I've tried replacing cables, updating drivers, updating Windows and my latest change was disabling SNMP. If that doesn't work I'm going to try disabling bidirectional printing, but I'm running low on ideas. I have 1 user that is experiencing this issue. All network printers show offline until the spooler is restarted. There are no errors in the event logs. This occurs every days.
The biggest part of the problem I was facing was mismatched drivers; especially when dealing with a combination of bit and bit architectures. All of my workstations are bit, but our servers are all bit. It does make a difference. Remove all drivers and queues from the workstations and from the server if possible.
Clean out the print spooler folders on the workstation Google this for detailed steps. Do this from the consoles, not from Remote Desktop sessions. Remove all Group Policies that reference printers the entire Group Policy, not just the individual entries. For me, this was a lot of work - I had to recreate all of the other settings in a new Group Policy Object.
This step is more important than I expected. Avoid "universal" and vendor proprietary drivers where possible, using only Windows INF packaged drivers. On a bit workstation important! The version numbers should be the same as the bit versions. On the server itself, use the Print Server Management snap-in to create the appropriate print queues and shares. Use Group Policies to allow print drivers to install on the workstations. If all is good, use Group Policy Preferences to map print queues if desired.
Ensure this is a new, separate Group Policy Object with only User defined objects and is applied only to User containers within Active Directory. I had some similar issues with Windows 7 and HP s I think - the drivers just would not work properly and caused the Windows 7 machine to stop printing altogether. No 'official'drivers for these printers as they're gettign on. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question. Laplink Software, Inc.

Can anyone in the Community help with a complicated print spooler problem in Windows 7 that doesn't seem to be answered in the current responses? I have a Toshiba Equium laptop with a Lexmark S all-in-one printer installed. The computer is at least 5 years old, the printer around 3 years old. Until recently I have had no problems with printing. This is the problem now: When I first boot up both computer and printer in the morning, if I want to print out a document it will download to the printer and print without a problem.
If I then want to print a second document, it downloads to the printer, which then appears to be preparing to print it makes all the right noises , but then does nothing and goes back into stand-by.
On checking the print queue, I can see the document sitting there, waiting to print. The only way I can get it to print is by going into 'Services' and stopping and re-starting the Print Spooler after which the second document will print off. However, if I then want to print a third document, once again it appears to download to the print queue I can see it in the queue but this time the printer does not make any indication that it is going to print.
Sometimes, I have to re-boot the computer and start the print process all over again as if it's the first time I have tried to print the document. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer, and have checked for driver updates, but this does not solve the problem, and I now believe that the issue lies with the print spooler software in the computer, rather than with the printer.
I should add that I get no error messages of any kind from either the computer or the printer, and both appear to working normally, yet clearly are not. I have tried following some of the help replies, but they don't work in this case. You will appreciate that this is becoming an very frustrating exercise.
